Coach Joe grew up playing youth hockey in Manchester NH. He played many years of NH regional youth hockey. In high school, he played for Memorial High School winning the 1991 NH State Division 1 championship. He started coaching hockey by volunteering with several youth hockey organizations in NH, assisting with the team in which his nephew was playing for. In 2006, he was offered and accepted the position of assistant coach for Manchester Central High School, were he still currently coaches. Many years on the ice and many years coaching various levels of hockey has allowed him to work with and teach many ages of kids multiple skills in an effective manner. The philosophy that he will bring to the ice is to enhance the skills that the players possess, teach new skills and to begin to teach each child to play in a way that encourages both personal development and team building skills. He played in the local Manchester leagues as a youth then played four years at Central High in Manchester (69-72), where he served as assistant captain as a junior and captain as a senior. Jim’s passion for hockey continued through coaching his son, Brandon Baril,
and other local kids from the area when he served as head coach of the Manchester Flames for 15 years at various youth levels during the years of 1981 through 1995. His teams were often participants in state and regional finals. He had the privilege to take two teams to the USA Hockey National Tournament, in 1990 (Buffalo, NY) and 1993 (Anchorage, AK). He also had the honor of coaching the New Hampshire team at the Yankee Conference Festival. Many of his players went on to play college hockey at many different levels including Division 1, and professional hockey in Europe. He feels fortunate to have had the same “core group” of kids during those 15 years, enabling him to develop a great coaching relationship with his teams. Jim believes youth hockey is about having fun, learning the game but most importantly, discipline and team work! Jim is excited to begin coaching in youth hockey again and is thrilled to announce that his son, Brandon Baril, will be assisting him. Brandon began skating at 18 months old, spent his hockey career with the Flames, Rhode Island Saints, Manchester West High School, and Manchester Central High School.
